“-scapes in colour” — Exhibition Opening at Xoanxo’s Gallery
Saturday 28 February 2016 | 11:00–16:30
Xoanxo’s Gallery, Makers Yard, Aldershot
On Saturday 28th of February 2016, Xoanxo opens the doors of his own exhibition space at Makers Yard, Aldershot, presenting a new body of work titled “-scapes in colour.” The opening of this permanent exhibition runs from 11:00 to 16:30 and marks a significant moment: a series conceived and created specifically for the unique spatial character of Xoanxo’s Gallery — a converted container studio at Makers Yard.
A Series Shaped by Space
The gallery itself has played a decisive role in shaping this collection. Its intimate scale required restraint — and in that limitation, a new intensity emerged. Most of the works measure 28 x 28 cm, with a number of smaller 20 x 20 cm pieces. Executed in acrylic on paper, the paintings embrace concentration rather than monumentality. Space is rarely neutral. It shapes perception, movement, expectation. In “-scapes in colour”, Xoanxo allows space not only to frame the work, but to determine it.
The title deliberately leaves the prefix open. These are not simply landscapes, nor strictly cityscapes or seascapes. They are impressions — fragments — suggestions of space; they are colour-scapes, mind-scans of saturated tones fractured into atmospheric veils. Colour becomes terrain. Texture becomes architecture. Drips suggest gravity; scraped passages suggest erosion. Each painting proposes a place without fully describing it.
Rather than depicting a scene, Xoanxo constructs an experience of space through colour relationships and material contrasts.
An Exhibition Made for Makers Yard
This exhibition is inseparable from its location. Xoanxo’s Gallery — a container at Makers Yard, Aldershot — is not a neutral cube. It is industrial, compact, and personal. The setting encourages dialogue. Visitors are not distant spectators but participants in a shared space.
By creating a series specifically for this venue, Xoanxo embraces the physical reality of the gallery and transforms constraint into creative focus. The compact format invites close viewing, encouraging an intimate engagement between artwork and audience.
Come and experience “-scapes in colour” in the space for which it was conceived — where colour becomes place, and small formats hold expansive worlds.
